Scott McTominay has revealed his final words to then Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag as he decided to end his 22-year association with the Red Devils in the summer.
The Scotland international moved to Napoli for £25.7million and has been the subject of criticism at United under Ten Hag.
Since joining Napoli, the 28-year-old has had a new lease of life, scoring three goals and providing three assists for Antonio Conte’s title-chasing side. His decision to leave Manchester United to play in southern Italy was a wise one and the midfielder has revealed his desire to “be number one” motivated him to make the change.
McTominay claims he told Ten Hag that on a difficult final day at Carrington, even though the Dutchman wanted him to stay at Old Trafford.
“It’s my last day, I have to see everyone and it’s not easy to say goodbye. But that’s football,” he told BBC Scotland.
“That’s life. I spoke to him (Ten Hag), he gave his opinion on the situation.”
“I said, ‘Listen, this is my career. I’m here to Promotion ufabet push myself.’ In this situation, I had to look for the top spot and follow my instincts about what I wanted to do with my career and not let any external factors hold me back. It worked out well.”
“I love that football club so much, they have been my life for 22 years, but now I have to move on. I am very happy here.”
